Judy Herbert on how we can help our clients who struggle with lordosis & kyphosis to get more out of their mat work classes.
Saturday, 23 November 2019 from 10:30-16:30
This day-long workshop follows the origin and insertion points for this muscle and observes how the awareness of these transforms and organises our movements. Applying slow eccentric action exercises (Eric Franklin) we lengthen and strengthen the muscle fibres. With the unique function of psoas major to integrate the spine with the legs we find that the rolling exercises of the mat work are transformed and become more within the grasp of all. Lordosis lengthens out and a real Powerhouse becomes more possible. In the afternoon session we explore how to apply the above to the thoracic spine, and how we can help our clients to lengthen, lift and open their upper body.”

Judy Herbert began studying Pilates in 1980 with Alan Herdman (UK founder of The Method) whilst a student at the London Contemporary Dance School (1980-84). During her dance career she continued training with Alan at his Homer Row Studio and later with Hana Jones (founder, Pilates Foundation). In 1996, she was invited by Gordon Thomson to undertake an apprenticeship with him at his studio in South Kensington. She worked there full-time as a teacher for the next 10 years, during which time she was also invited onto the Body Control Pilates Teacher Training team. Working with BCP brought Judy the opportunity to teach all of the Mat and Equipment courses, supervise trainees and be an examiner for the Mat and Reformer courses. In 2002, Judy was part of the first Teacher Training course held in the UK by Eric Franklin, completing the first Level of his training scheme.
Judy’s special areas of work include Parkinson’s Disease, Cerebral Palsy and Scoliosis. Guest teaching includes Phoenix Dance Theatre (Gyrokinesis), NHS (CPD Physiotherapy training in Pilates and Gyrokinesis), NHS Breast Cancer Care, The Pilates Place, Stratford & The Pilates Studio MK teacher-training workshops.
Judy continues to write her own workshops regarding areas where she feels she can make a contribution. Upcoming workshops in teaching skills will be held in the Pilates Education And Research Studio, London in January 2020. Judy’s current fields of study are reflex integration in terms of Rhythmic Movement Training (RMTi).
